Team of One—Solo Act—One person wonder

If you are a team of one—don't fret, you can still accomplish your dreams! Below is a list of hints and tips we collected to make sure you stay motivated, even while working alone.

A team of one is a visionary that plays all the roles in creative project management. Sometimes we have those great ideas that don’t need additional maven support and only needs the drive and talent harnessed by the visionary.

We’d like to share best practices for those who work alone.

20 Tips when working as a team of one on Jerne

  1. When working alone, take time to step away and come back with fresh eyes before making a big decision.

Many times, when you’re deep into work on a project and you’re working alone, it’s easy to get stuck in the tasks. It’s helpful to take a moment to step back from what you’re working on to see the vision in a new light.

  1. Use the Future board section when you have ideas that come up but may not be a good fit for the current vision.

There’s no need to let a great idea go just because the time isn’t right, or the resources aren’t available yet. The future board on Jerne is a safe place to put ideas that you aren’t ready to get off the ground yet, but you don’t want to lose them.

  1. Ask for help when you need it.  A Team of 1 does not rule out receiving assistance.

Just because you’re primarily working alone on your vision doesn’t mean that you should be afraid to seek out assistance whenever you need it.

  1. Try workshare locations that allow you to work alone and still be surrounded by others.

Working alone in your office or in your home all the time can be lonely. Changing up the scenery and positioning yourself around other people but in an environment that still allows you to focus, is a great way keep working on your vision.

  1. Give yourself more time and try not to rush important decisions.

As much as we want to see progress and complete our projects, it is important to take ample time to give decisions for your vision the consideration that they need.

  1. Don’t be afraid to research. When researching for one idea it could spark other ideas.

Doing research can save you a lot of trouble because you will have more information to make better decisions, and it might also lead to learning about a topic, which could spark new ideas.

  1. Learn how to be a creative leader and choose to invest in learning skills that will help you lead better.

Leadership skills will help you bring your vision to the finish line. Even if you are working alone, you are still leading your project and you are a team of one. You’ll have to make sure that you are maintaining motivation and progressing at your desired pace.

  1. Make sure you really want to do it, or you won't stick with it.

Half-hearted commitment to a project will not give you the determination you need to push through when obstacles or challenges present themselves. It often leads to intimidation and the project is abandoned.

  1. Don't overwork, even if it's for your dream.

We all work hard for things we are passionate about, but it is important not to be too carried away by your passion that you sacrifice your health.

  1. Use the exercises to help generate ideas in times when you would normally have the support of others.

Sometimes you just need a little help, and that’s okay. You can use exercises to connect with your vision and get keep the momentum going.

  1. Get the most out of each of the steps in Jerne, maximizing the potential of the outcome.

Give every step your best effort to give your project the best chance of success. Every stage builds on the next one and as you complete the realms the potential of the outcome increases more.

  1. Understand that rework could be a part of your process.

Don’t shun restructuring the way you look at what you have created, if it means making it better.

  1. Use freelancers for tasks you are unable to complete at the level of quality you expect.

You could try to learn how to do everything yourself and maybe end up close to what you want, or you can hire a freelancer who can give you what you want at a higher quality and faster timeline.

  1. Get feedback and insights from people that match your target profile, throughout your journey on the progress you’re making.

Feedback is an underrated and powerful tool for enhancing your vision. Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback.

  1. Make each stage count and treat each stage like its own individual accomplishment. Remember you will get out of your vision what you put into it.

Celebrating your wins along the way is what will fuel you with the motivation to keep going. Give each stage your all and celebrate completing the stage because it is an accomplishment.

  1. While Maven Clarity is an activity designed for a team, you can use this as an exercise to share your story to ensure you can deliver it with ease and clarity.

You don’t have to take too much of anyone’s time. Just share the story of your vision with them. It might make sense to you because you wrote the story, but does it make sense to others? You can find out for sure by sharing your vision story and making sure they’re clear on it.

  1. Check the Exhibits regularly to confirm you are mastering the realms.

The Exhibits help make sure that every aspect of the realm is being fulfilled so don’t forget to check them frequently.

  1. Test using all Jerne features, so you are prepared during times when you decide to work with a team.

Maybe you’re a team of one right now but you might not always be. Having ideas documented by using all of Jerne’s features helps you be ready to bring someone on board without last minute scrambling to provide imagery, examples, and representations of your vision.

  1. Be honest when documenting updates so you always have a clear understanding of progress made.

It’s great to see the progress bar move but it’s even better to have an honest and clear idea of how far your vision has come and how far it must go.

  1. Maintain your board streak. Staying committed to your idea can help ensure success.

The streak is a great way to keep your commitment to working on your project. Even if you do a little everyday, you’re still making progress.
